The Plot

Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream was turned into a movie in 2017. The film, which was directed by Joe Wright, stars James McAvoy, Amy Acker, and Matt Lucas. The movie is a live-action/animated adaptation of the play, with the characters being portrayed by both live actors and puppets.

The Plot:
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy about two young lovers, Hermia and Lysander, who run away from Hermia’s father into the forest. There they stumble upon a group of fairies who are fighting over a man, Oberon. Oberon is in love with Titania, who is refusing to give him a certain flower. In retribution, Oberon casts a spell on her that makes her fall in love with the first creature she sees when she wakes up. This happens to be an ass (played by Lucas). Meanwhile, Hermia and Lysander get lost in the forest and wind up getting drugged so that they fall asleep. When Hermia wakes up she sees Lysander sleeping next to her and believes that he has betrayed her. She runs off into the forest where she meets Demetrius (who is also looking for Hermia). He tells her that he loves her and she believes him. Hermia then comes across Helena (who is in love with Demetrius) and tells her what has happened. The two women argue and Helena runs off into the woods. Eventually everyone winds up at Oberon’s palace where all of the spells are reversed and everyone falls back in love with their original partner.

The Locations

A Midsummer Nights Dream is a play by William Shakespeare, traditionally believed to have been written around 1595. The play centers on the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors, who are manipulated by the king and queen of the fairies. The play is one of Shakespeare’s most popular works for the stage and has been adapted into many different versions over the years.

The 2017 film adaptation of A Midsummer Nights Dream was directed by David Leveaux and starred Ann Coulter, Hamish Linklater, Stanley Tucci, and confirmed bachelor Evan Rachel Wood.

This particular adaptation was filmed on-location in various spots around England, including:
-The Duke’s Palace in Norwich (used for the exterior shots of Duke Theseus’ palace)
-Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire ( utilized for interior and exterior shots of Duke Theseus’ palace)
-Lulworth Cove in Dorset (where much of the “mechanicals” scene was shot)
-The woods near Cranborne Chase (employed as the primary location for Fairyland)
-Westminster Abbey in London (only seen very briefly in one scene near the end of the film)

The Costumes

The film’s costumes were designed by Jacqueline Durran. She was inspired by “the colors and textures of the Elizabethan era”, as well as “the fairy world and Elementals of the play”. The film’s colour palette includes “a restricted number of jewel-like colours”, which are “associated with specific characters or groups”. For example, blue is linked to Helena, yellow to Oberon, and green to Titania.

The Music

The film’s music was composed by Patrick Doyle and features the London Symphony Orchestra.
